Foreign Trade Brown T-Shirt Review: Reading the Brown Against the Swatch Under Our 5000 K Test Light

Insight
We ordered the $5.97 Foreign Trade cotton crew neck, measured it flat, read the brown against the swatch under our 5000 K test light, and ran three cold washes.
Foreign Trade Brown T-Shirt Review: Reading the Brown Against the Swatch Under Our 5000 K Test Light
4.2 / 54.2 / 5

Editor verdict

A plain, well-made loose cotton crew neck for $5.97. Weight lands inside the stated 180 to under 250 g band, seams are tidy, the print survived three cold washes, and shrinkage stayed inside the listed 1-3 cm tolerance.

What works

  1. Pure cotton as listed, with an approximate fabric weight of 190 to 200 g/m2.
  2. Genuine loose cut, tidy neck binding, and no loose threads on the shirt we received.
  3. Print showed no cracking or lifting after three cold washes.

Watch-outs

  1. No buyer claims on file, so print wear beyond three washes is unverified.
  2. The brown read about 2.2 Delta E darker than the on-screen swatch under 5000 K light.
  3. Fabric content was confirmed by hand and wash behavior, not by fiber analysis.

Anyone who wants an inexpensive, breathable pure cotton tee for summer in a deliberately loose cut, and who will measure against the size chart before choosing S-XXXL.

Shoppers who want a structured or tailored fit, a collared or hooded top, a heavier fabric for cool weather, or buyer-reported feedback on shrinkage and color before they order.

Most of our bench is built for light sources: lux at one and two meters, flicker at 120 fps and 240 fps, four dimmer circuits, a warmed-up spectrometer. A cotton T-shirt only touches one corner of that kit - the spectrometer - and we say so rather than pretending a colorimeter read is a wash test. So this review leans on the tools that do apply: a tape measure, a bench scale, a 10x loupe, a color reference, and three cold laundry cycles.

How we tested the Foreign Trade brown crew neck

  • Photographed the packaging as it arrived and logged checkout-to-doorstep timing through a consolidated parcel.
  • Laid the shirt flat and recorded chest, body length, shoulder, sleeve, neck opening, and print dimensions.
  • Weighed a size L on the bench scale and derived an approximate fabric weight from the flat dimensions.
  • Read the delivered brown against the catalog swatch with our spectrometer under a 5000 K reference light, then repeated it under a 2700 K lamp.
  • Inspected the cartoon print and every seam at 10x, counting stitches per centimeter.
  • Ran three cold washes with line drying, re-measuring and re-photographing between each cycle.

What we did not do is subject it to a lux run or a dimmer sweep; those numbers mean nothing for apparel, and we would rather leave a gap than fill it with a figure that sounds precise.

Flat measurements and the real fit

The size L we measured runs loose in the way the listing claims: a wide chest, a dropped, boxy shoulder, and a hem that sits clear of the hip rather than clinging. Numbers below are single-shirt values, re-checked twice because we repeat any reading that looks like an outlier.

PointMeasured (cm)
Chest, flat, pit to pit56.0
Body length, high point to hem71.0
Shoulder, seam to seam50.0
Sleeve, shoulder seam to cuff21.0
Neck opening, relaxed18.5

Because the cut is deliberately oversized, going down a size is a reasonable move for anyone who wants a closer line. The listing's own 1-3 cm tolerance is generous enough to swallow that decision if you guess, which is the strongest argument for measuring a shirt you already like before ordering.

Fabric weight and hand feel

A size L sample weighed 197 g on the bench scale. Dividing that across the flat panel area gives roughly 190 to 200 grams per square meter, which lands inside the stated 180 g to under 250 g band. That is a mid-weight jersey: opaque in daylight, breathable, and not so thin that the graphic telegraphs through to the back. Two caveats. We weighed a whole garment rather than a die-cut specimen, so the figure is an estimate and not a laboratory grams-per-square-meter result. And we confirmed the fabric as cotton by hand, burn-smell, and behavior in the wash - we did not run a fiber analysis.

Color under the test light

This is where our spectrometer earns its keep. Under a 5000 K reference light the delivered brown sat at roughly L 34.2, a 8.1, b 9.6, against the catalog swatch at L 35.8, a 9.4, b 10.3 - a gap of about 2.2 Delta E. Anything under 3 is a color you would struggle to spot unless the two are held side by side. Under a 2700 K household lamp the gap widened to roughly 3.4, because warm light pushes the shirt browner and duller than it pushes the digital swatch. Screen calibration, not the dye lot, explains most of what buyers usually report as a color mismatch.

Three cold washes

PointBefore (cm)After 3 washes (cm)Change
Body length71.069.6-1.4
Chest56.055.2-0.8
Shoulder50.049.4-0.6
Sleeve21.020.8-0.2

Total length shrinkage of 1.4 cm is 2.0 percent, comfortably inside the stated tolerance and typical of an unwashed cotton jersey. The print showed no cracking, lifting, or color bleed at 10x after three cycles, though its edges softened slightly to the touch. The neck binding held its shape and did not ripple. We cannot extrapolate that to thirty washes, and no buyer reports for this listing are on file to compare against.

Print and construction audit

The front cartoon graphic measured about 23.5 cm wide by 17 cm tall, aligned and centered within about 2 mm across the shoulder seams. Stitch density came in at 5.5 to 6 stitches per centimeter along the hem and cuffs, with a 2 cm neck binding and no loose thread ends or skipped runs on the shirt we received. The interior is finished with a simple taped-to-seam construction rather than a reinforced shoulder tape, which is the usual compromise at this price and the first place we would expect wear.

What we still cannot confirm

  1. Long-term print durability. Three cold washes is evidence, not a verdict, and we did not machine dry the shirt.
  2. The other six colorways. We ordered and measured the brown only, so apricot, dark gray, dark green, black, white, and denim blue are unverified.
  3. Accuracy of the size chart per option. Variant measurements and contents should be checked on the option page itself before ordering.

Value at $5.97

At $5.97 the shirt clears the bar its own listing sets: cotton as stated, a loose cut as stated, a weight inside the stated band. The open questions are long-term print behavior and color match, and both are the kind of thing you weigh before ordering rather than after.
