Review methodology

Ordering and intake

For each review, we order the product, log the order date, and time the delivery from checkout to doorstep. That agent timing figure tells readers how quickly a listing actually ships. On arrival we photograph the packaging, list every included part, and note damage or missing pieces before the product ever reaches the bench.

Bench tests

  • Lux at 1 m and 2 m on a matte gray wall, measured at three beam positions.

  • Correlated color temperature and CRI with a spectrometer, warm and cool ends noted.

  • Flicker screening at 120 fps and 240 fps, documenting visible banding at the recorded camera settings. Camera footage alone does not quantify modulation depth or establish the absence of flicker.

  • Dimmer compatibility across four household circuits: leading-edge, trailing-edge, smart switch, and a legacy rotary dimmer.

  • Warm-up curve and output stability over 60 minutes.

  • Surface temperature at 30 minutes with a thermal probe, plus driver and housing readings.

  • Standby and off-state power draw on smart fixtures.

  • Drop test for portable lamps: three drops from 76 cm onto oak flooring, checking shade, joint, and switch.

  • Fit checks against common US fixtures: E26, E12, GU10, and integrated-LED housings.

Field testing

Every lamp and bulb spends at least one week in a real room, usually a living room, a home office, or a bedside table. We note how the light reads on skin, wood, and fabric, and whether the switch, app, or remote is annoying by day seven.

Comparison tables

Products in the same category face the same bench, the same circuits, and the same test wall. Comparison tables list measured output, color, flicker, dimmer behavior, price paid, and score so readers can compare like with like.

Scoring rubric

5 excellent: measured performance and daily use both hold up, with no significant compromise at the price. 4 good: strong performance with one or two clear trade-offs. 3 adequate: works as described, but with limits a buyer should know about. 2 poor: notable failures in output, build, or reliability. 1 very poor: unsafe, broken, or materially misrepresented. Scores are written as X / 5.

Retesting

A changed SKU, firmware, driver or price prompts a review of the affected result. Retests repeat the bench suite and add a dated update note at the top of the review.

Comparison scope

Identify the exact SKU, voltage, fixture, dimmer and relevant firmware. Brightness observations need distance, orientation and ambient conditions. Color rendering, flicker and electrical claims require appropriate instruments. Keep specifications separate from measurements and state the combinations examined. Certification needs authoritative documentation for the model. Follow product instructions and local installation requirements, including qualified electrical help where appropriate.

The review identifies the sample, dates, conditions and any steps omitted. A hands-on claim requires documented inspection or use; desk research is labelled. Scoring uses the complete 1-to-5 scale with the criteria and evidence explained, including unfavorable findings and missing information.
