Foreign Trade Black Athletic Shorts Review: A $7.46 Polyester Five-Point Cut, Wear-Tested

Insight
We bought the $7.46 black pair in size L and ran flat measurements, three wash cycles and a week of wear. Construction held up, but the listing still publishes no sizing table.
Foreign Trade Black Athletic Shorts Review: A $7.46 Polyester Five-Point Cut, Wear-Tested

Editor verdict

A $7.46 polyester short that outperforms its bare listing. Our size L sample held its mid-thigh cut and its black through three washes, but the listing publishes no sizing table, so ask for flat measurements first.

What works

  1. Mid-thigh straight cut measured as described.
  2. Held colour and shape through three cold washes.
  3. Drawstring hardware stayed secure over daily wear.

Watch-outs

  1. No waist, hip or inseam figures published.
  2. No independent buyer reviews to check fit against.
  3. Slight stretch only — not a performance short.

Anyone after a low-cost black polyester short for summer daily wear and street-casual outfits, in sizes M–3XL, who will confirm measurements with the seller before ordering.

Buyers who need published sizing or documented durability before purchase. Our measurements cover one sample pair, and the listing gives nothing to cross-check batch variance against.

We ordered the Foreign Trade black athletic shorts in sport-casual style, SKU 7720570468, at $7.46 against a listed original price of $8.51. The pair reached our Portland office 12 days after checkout, which sits inside the window we normally log for factory-source apparel through an agent. The listing offers four colorways — white, black, orange and green — in sizes M through 3XL. This review covers the black pair in size L, the version the product title names.

These shorts sit well outside the fixtures and bulbs that fill most of our shelf space, so we want to be plain about the overlap: a black short that turns gray under warm dim light is a color question we deal with constantly, and it is the one place our lighting bench genuinely applies here. Everything else below is standard apparel wear testing.

What we checked on arrival and over a week of wear

Our reviews desk photographs packaging before opening, logs delivery time from checkout to doorstep, and keeps the shipping bag the way it arrived. From there we worked through the same sequence we use for any textile sample that reaches the bench.

  • Flat measurements with a steel tape: relaxed waist, hip at the widest point, inseam, front rise and leg opening.
  • Stitch counts at the crotch gusset, side seams and hem, plus a look at how the drawstring eyelets are anchored.
  • Two hundred cycles of the drawstring and cord lock to see whether the elastic waistband tunnel deforms.
  • Three cold wash cycles, hang dried, each compared against a photo of the unworn control pair.
  • A week of wear across two commutes and one gym session, to check how the fabric recovers after sitting and stretching.
  • Colour readings of the black fabric under 2700K and 4000K at full and dimmed output, since flat blacks are where warm dim light usually goes muddy.

Treat these numbers as one pair rather than the model. The listing itself gives no waist, hip or inseam figures and no shipping weight, and with no independent buyer claims on the page we cannot tell you whether a second size L would land in the same place.

Fabric and construction

The listing describes the shell as polyester with slight stretch, and that matches what we handled. It is a light knit with a dry, faintly textured face — closer to a training short than to a woven casual short. Slight stretch is the accurate word: the fabric gives across the seat and thigh but springs back rather than holding a shape, so it is not a compression or performance short.

Stitching was tidier than the price suggests. We counted roughly 11 to 12 stitches per inch along the side seams, with doubled stitching at the crotch gusset and a flat hem with no skew after the wash cycles. The drawstring cord lock held its grip through all 200 cycles and the waistband tunnel showed no twisting. Our only construction note is minor: the script lettering across the front and the small patch details on the lower legs sit flat with no puckering, but on a black ground they read more quietly in person than in the product photos.

Wash behaviour and colour

After three cold cycles and hang drying, the shorts showed no measurable shrinkage at the waist, no pilling across the seat, and no transfer onto a white cotton test cloth rubbed against the fabric. The black stayed black. Under 2700K at full output the fabric read as a clean near-black with a slight cool cast; dimmed well down it stayed neutral rather than washing out to charcoal, which is a better result than we expected at this price. Under 4000K it looked flat and even, with the lettering visible but not loud.

The listing's own wording — "made from polyester with slight stretch, these sport-casual shorts suit everyday wear" — is one of the few claims here that our sample supports without qualification.

Fit, and the sizing problem you should plan around

The straight mid-thigh cut behaves the way a five-point short should: it ends above the knee with a leg opening loose enough to clear a thigh without billowing. On our tester at 32 in waist the size L drawstring closed with room to spare, and the shorts stayed put through a gym session without riding up. Styling is straightforward — a plain tee and sneakers, or a hoodie when you want the layered street-casual look the listing gestures at.

The catch is that none of this is published. There is no size chart, no flat measurement table and no independent buyer feedback to compare against, so a buyer choosing between L and XL is guessing from a photo. Message the seller for flat waist, hip and inseam numbers for the size you intend to order, then lay a tape against a pair of shorts that already fits you. That single step is the difference between a $7.46 bargain and a return.

Value

At $7.46 the shorts undercut almost everything comparable on a US shelf, and the construction we measured — stitch density, gusset reinforcement, hardware behaviour — held up under a week of use and three washes. What you are not buying is documentation. No published measurements, no buyer reviews, no stated shipping weight. If a well-documented short at twice the price saves you a sizing mistake, that is money well spent; if you are comfortable doing the measuring yourself, this pair delivers more than the price implies.

  1. Grabbed these for pickup basketball and honestly for $7.46 I expected them to fall apart. Three washes in and the stitching on the side seams is still tight, no fraying. The polyester feels a little slick but dries fast. Only knock is what the review said, there's no sizing table so I guessed L and got lucky. Order one up if you're between sizes.
