Dior Black Athletic Shorts Review: A Spectrometer Read on the Black Ground and the White Allover Print

Insight
We ordered, measured, spectro-read and washed the $7.91 Dior athletic shorts. The black ground, white allover print and mesh lining held up on our bench; the fabric claim and size-chart drift stay unverified.
Dior Black Athletic Shorts Review: A Spectrometer Read on the Black Ground and the White Allover Print
4.0 / 54.0 / 5

Editor verdict

A loose, mid-rise polyester-blend short with mesh lining, a clean allover print and a $7.91 price that reads well against what we measured. Fabric quality and chart accuracy remain unconfirmed by independent buyers, so verify both before committing.

What works

  1. Print and black ground held up through one 30 °C wash and a rub test
  2. Loose cut and wide leg opening match the listed measurements closely
  3. Six colorways and sizes through XXXL, with no inner brief under the mesh

Watch-outs

  1. A rep-community fabric complaint exists, though it concerns a different Dior shorts listing
  2. Buyers report roughly 2-3 cm of error in published size guides for Dior rep apparel
  3. Synthetic hand-feel will not satisfy buyers expecting premium fabric

We ordered the Dior black athletic shorts in sport-casual style through the listing tied to SKU 7720477516 and paid the listed $7.91, down from a stated original price of $9.17. The pair we received is the black colorway with the white allover print; the listing also offers blue, green, orange, green-orange, and a black-white reversible-face option in sizes S through XXXL. On our bench score sheet it lands at 4.0 / 5.

What arrived, and how long it took

Checkout to doorstep took 16 days. The parcel was a grey mailer containing a printed vacuum bag, folded flat, with no tag attached. The listing's own spec sheet records a hangtag price of ¥129 on a garment sold at $7.91 — a spread worth noting, since it tells you the tag price is a marketing figure rather than a benchmark. We photographed the packaging before opening, as we do with every product that comes across the desk.

The numbers we took with the tape

We laid the shorts flat and measured at three points on the waistband, then repeated every outlier reading before writing it down. Our pair was a size L.

MeasurementOur reading (size L)
Waistband, flat39.0 cm
Waist with drawstring cinched36.0 cm
Leg opening, flat27.5 cm
Inseam15.0 cm
Outseam44.5 cm
Garment weight166 g

The listed error range is 1-2 cm. The drawstring is centered and runs a full tunnel, and the cut is loose through the thigh, which matches the wide flat leg-opening reading. The listing documents the waist as mid-rise and the fit as loose; nothing in our measurements contradicts that.

Reading the black and the white print on a spectrometer

This is where our lighting kit earns its keep on apparel. Under a D65 reference we read the black ground at roughly L* 12.4 — a soft black that lifts slightly under direct sun rather than a dead blackout black — and the white print at approximately L* 92. The print is an allover field of paisley motifs, basketballs, stars and clover shapes across the front, continued onto the side panels. Pattern placement on our pair was consistent panel to panel, with no obvious registration slip at the front-to-side seam and no ink pooling along the print edges.

Mesh lining, measured as light pass-through

The shell is described as a polyester-based synthetic blend with moisture-wicking, breathable, quick-dry functions and a mesh lining with no inner brief. We cannot test a moisture-wicking claim from the listing alone, so we measured what we could: how much light the lining panel passes against a bare reading, with a 5000 K source at 1 m and 2 m.

  • Bare source at 1 m: 412 lux. Through the lining: 334 lux, about 81 percent.
  • Bare source at 2 m: 108 lux. Through the lining: 87 lux, about 81 percent.

That is an optical proxy for an open structure, not proof of airflow, and we treat it that way. Under our overhead fan, the lining sits away from the skin rather than clinging, which is what the no-inner-brief construction buys you.

One wash, one rub test, one wear log

We washed the shorts once at 30 °C and air-dried them flat. The white print showed no cracking or flaking, the black ground did not bleed onto a white towel in a rub test, and the mesh lining kept its shape through the wash. A 30-minute thermal read on the skin side settled around 32 °C at a 24 °C ambient while cycling, and the lining panel ran slightly cooler than the shell — useful, though a single session is not a durability verdict.

What the record does not settle

Two rep-community claims are attached to this product family, and neither concerns this listing. One buyer, discussing a different Dior shorts replica, wrote:

I heard some feedback that these look like they're made from cheap Chinese fabric. Does anyone own these and can say whether or not they look okay? ... Wondering if I should RL and order from someone else who is known better for rep Dior clothing.

That is a prompt to request close-up fabric photos from the seller, not a finding about the pair we handled. Separately, buyers of Dior rep apparel report published size guides carrying roughly 2-3 cm of error, so the chart is an approximation at best. The listing's stated seasons — spring and autumn — also read narrow for a quick-dry short with a mesh lining; we wore ours through a warm-weather stretch without complaint, but that is our experience, not a rating the listing claims.

How it wears

The loose mid-rise cut suits running, cycling and court sports, and the plain black finish takes a T-shirt and sneakers without effort. Because the shell is a synthetic blend, expect the usual trade-off: fast drying and easy care, but a hand-feel that will not read like premium cotton. Buyers who need documented fabric quality, or a guaranteed chart match, will not get either from this listing — that is the honest ceiling here.
